Toothache is the obvious reason to see a dentist — but many dental problems are easier, and cheaper, to treat when you catch them early. Here are six signs it is worth booking a check-up.
1. Sensitivity to hot or cold
A twinge when you sip tea or iced water can be an early sign of a cavity or worn enamel.
2. Bleeding gums
Gums that bleed when you brush are often the first sign of gum disease — very treatable when caught early.
3. Persistent bad breath
If brushing and mouthwash don't help, bad breath can point to decay or gum problems.
4. A chip, crack or lost filling
Even if it doesn't hurt, a damaged tooth can let in bacteria. It is best checked promptly.
5. Jaw pain or clicking
Pain when chewing, or a clicking jaw, is worth mentioning to your dentist.
6. It has been over a year
Even with no symptoms, a check-up and cleaning every six to twelve months keeps small problems small.
